Norway Work Permit – Everything You Need to Know
A work permit is an official document that allows a foreigner to work legally in Norway. The permit is issued by the competent authority responsible for the employer’s location. It specifies the company that is hiring the foreign worker, as well as the position or type of work the individual is authorized to perform.
Work is considered legal only if the foreigner performs the job specified in the permit.
Changing Jobs with a Work Permit
If a foreigner wants to change jobs—including switching employers, positions, or industries—they must apply for and obtain a new work permit.
Validity Period of Work Permits
A work permit is typically issued for a fixed period, but for no longer than 3 years.
If the foreign worker is a board member of a company with more than 25 employees at the time of application, the permit may be granted for up to 5 years.
Although the law defines the maximum duration of work permits, the competent authorities may issue permits for a shorter period, depending on local regulations.
